Hammerhead: A Star Wars Collecting Story
For this review, I wanted to do something, deluxe. Why? Because this figure is deluxe, but also pays homage to the 3 figures that have come before him. And also because my favorite Kenner Era alien figure is, you guessed it, Hammerhead. With the Cantina HasLab coming later this year (I hope. As of this writing on Wed June 11th Hasbro has a livestream set for Friday Jun 13th, so hopefully some update will be offered), Hammerhead is an essential figure for that display. But there are 2 main gripes I have with this figure:
1. He should not be on a deluxe card with his original Kenner image.
2. He should have gotten a single card like the one he comes on for the cardboard Cantina Playset.
With that out of the way, I will say so far this is my best figure of 2025. Hands down. So far. There is more to come, but topping Hammerhead will be difficult. So let's take a look!
My blog post a couple weeks ago had the top picture. But as you can see, he's got plenty of excellent articulation! He makes the most of his 17 POA, posing him is easy. And despite his incredibly large head, he has a decent amount of balance. I was able to get a peg to fit in his heel, which is a problem for figures that have rocker ankles in this scale. But he's easy to move around. No tight joints, so I never feared he would break. He's got barbell hips, thigh swivels, ball jointed shoulders, elbows, knees, waist and has a double barbell head which has a decent range of motion. In the accessory photos, you'll see some of the extra articulation he can do.
He can even sit down! I didn't have a chair handy to fit him, though. The sculpt is just simply incredible. All the strange designs come forth so effortlessly, he looks to be based off a real individual and not a guy in a costume. Since he's Ithorian, he has mouths on both sides of his head, which is why I did the profile shots. His eyes are also well painted. The quality control on at least my sample is flawless. The cloth skirt doesn't limit movement, and doesn't take away from the look of the figure. While I'm certain it's possible to remove the head to replace his scarf, I won't do that.
In Legends (and even in DisneyCanon), Hammerhead, aka Momaw Nadon, was a pacifist. Which is ironic considering his accessories. But the title of this post is a collecting story, so I needed help. And I found it! The accessories actually came with the previous releases, so I'm going to show those previous figures off with the modern figure using the accessories. But first, group photo!
From left to right: Kenner Hammerhead, POTF2 Hammerhead, Saga Collection Hammerhead and Vintage Collection Hammerhead.
1. Kenner Hammerhead
The Kenner Hammerhead came with a Stormtrooper blaster. I had hoped to include one with my Kenner Hammerhead, but I forgot which small bag I placed it in. So I opted to forgo adding accessories to the older figures. The VC Hammerhead comes with a standard Stormtrooper blaster which fits well in his right hand, but you do have to put the pointer finger in the trigger, but it will stay there. Also attempted to move the Kenner version's head, but it moved crookedly. So, I have 2 choices: never move his head again or get another one. I also need to move my Kenner figures around more, too. But moving on.
2. POTF2 Hammerhead
The POTF2 Hammerhead is one of the best sculpted figures of that line. Will he make my all time Top 10 POTF2 figures? Find out this August! That figure came with a heavy blaster, and the VC version holds it quite well, executing a perfect two-handed weapon grip (THWG). I bought another POTF2 Hammerhead but removed the vest to make him one of Luke's new Jedi students, and this was years before the Clone Wars Microseries. For 1995-96, a great figure. But the VC one blows him away.
3. Saga Collection Hammerhead
The Saga Collection Hammerhead came with a cup, and a staff which it couldn't hold. The VC Hammerhead comes with a swappable hand that can hold the cup, and he comes with a staff as well. Neither figure could hold the staff well, although I haven't attempted to place it in his right hand. The Saga Collection Hammerhead could only hold his cup well. This set up took a while because the staff kept falling out, and these were the 2 best pictures that weren't blurry. From a sculpting standpoint, the Saga Hammerhead is excellent. I was putting it in my Cantina display, and I still will. He looks just different enough to be someone else, and a big galaxy can have 2 Ithorians in the same place, can't it?! I was hoping to get a toast going, but the lack of arm articulation on the Saga figure made it impossible.
Now, something has recently changed for deluxe VC figures. Hammerhead came on a 7 × 9 card while standard VC figures come on a 6 × 9 card. Going forward, any deluxe figures will be on the standard 6 × 9 card, as revealed on the livestream Friday morning. Putting a classic Kenner card image on a deluxe figure is just insulting to carded collectors, as with a bigger bubble he can fit on a standard card. The VC Gamorrean Guard proved it (and might still be available on Target's website). I don't like that this was a deluxe figure, as I wanted a carded version for my collection. He will come in the Cantina Playset 4 pack, on a single card with his head turned to fit in the bubble, and in his Kenner colors. He's a bigger figure, like Zeb is. But his accessories would probably justify the deluxe price. So in regards to that, I find it unfavorable. But as a figure, he's excellent. No issues at all. But Hasbro please get a single card version, with his head turned in the bubble, and the Stormtrooper blaster.
Friday's livestream gave no Cantina potential ship date, but did reveal the Snowtrooper 4 pack, a brand new Darth Vader TIE Fighter and the quickly sold out May 4th exclusives will be available for preorder tomorrow. The latter of which is great news!
