VC Jyn Erso Review
Now I know what some of you are going to say: why is Jyn Erso spooky?! Well, for VC fans in 2018 Jyn was warming many pegs because Wal Mart had just put her 3.75 inch Black Series figure on their incredible $4 clearance sale, and in some instances you could get the $4 Jyn and the $12 VC Jyn.
Sporting 16 POA, Jyn as well as the Cassian Andor, Shoretrooper and Deathtrooper offered something new to SA 3.75 inch figures: thigh swivels. The ball socket hips, in addition to the thigh swivels enable Jyn to be posed in some neat action poses, and you don't have to worry about her holster inhibiting movement as it flows effortlessly with the right leg/hip. Jyn is also simply painted, but there are no smudges and everything looks clean, as it should.
Accessory wise, Jyn has something her then 6 inch Black Series counterpart didn't have: add on pieces to turn her pistol into a sniper rifle. Her pistol (the one she stole on Yavin 4 before jetting to Jedha, pun intended) fits neatly into her holster and if you store her loose it should stay put. Her vest is also removable as this is how Jyn looked as she led the Rebels to Scariff to get the Death Star plans. Her belt can be removed but be careful doing this. I had given thought to do it, but didn't want to damage the figure.
But now to get to the 2 things that bother me with this figure: the head sculpt and her right hand. Hasbro left the same head sculpt as seen in the 3.75 Black Series Jyn, a mistake they made with the VC Rey (Jakku) which doesn't really look like Felicity Jones. Actually, the Jyn head sculpt from the included figure with the AT-ACT has an improved one that could have been put on this figure, but wasn't. Her right hand cannot hold her blaster straight, so it points crooked. I have yet to find a blaster that can properly fit in her hand. You'll see it in the pictures what I'm talking about.
Now, is she essential for your collection? I have to say yes, because there aren't many OT era female figures, plus Jyn is a bad ass! Despite warming pegs in late 2017 through February 2019 this is a good figure. However, Jyn and Rey from this wave showed that if Hasbro were to go the repack route something needed to be offered as an incentive to buy, or buy again. The photo real updates of head sculpts soon began afterwards. Like I said, this isn't a bad figure at all. Just the timing of it's release into the VC was bad while there were still Black Series 3.75 Jyn's on clearance aisles. It's amazing the VC is still going on 4 years later. It's scary to think this figure could have been its downfall. Enjoy the pictures!
1. Simple Jyn. She actually stood up well, didn't have to lean her back.
2. Jyn crookedly holding her blaster. Sigh.
3. The hood from the 5 POA Jyn fits quite well on the VC Jyn. No need to pop her head off, it slides on and slides off, but more effort to take it off than putting it on. You don't have to pop her head off to get it off.
4. Jyn getting ready to kick some @$$!! The club comes from a Clone Wars Mandalorian Guard.
5. Lando Calrissian gives Luke advice on how to ask Jyn out on a date.
6. Luke shoots his shot. (Showing her in scale to other figures, plus throwing out a Star Wars AU where she and Cassian survive Scariff after a downloaded K2-SO gets into a new body and steals a shuttle to rescue Jyn and Cassian before getting vaporized)
7. Luke gets the date with Jyn (had to lean Luke back, Jyn actually stands up quite well in this shot and in the last picture)
