VC Deluxe Tattooine Boba Fett Review
Payoffs sometimes happen with toys. A feature will be added to a toy, and as a discriminating collector who goes over every inch of a new toy sculpt you wonder what comes next. When VC 186 Boba Fett came out, fans and collectors asked that question. Especially with the helmet, as it looked removable. Well, after almost 2 years we finally get an answer. Although it's an expensive answer. But the Tattooine Boba Fett is more than just a new figure.
Right off the bat, he's a Deluxe figure and is in a cardboard box attached to a Kenner card. The card is the same size as a standard VC figure, however the placement of the peghole is different. Now Hasbro will only be doing this for Deluxe figures. Boba comes nearly wrapped in paper, along with his accessories. But before you open the box you might want to give it a gentle shake. If stuff rattles around inside you might have loose accessories or the figure has lost a leg. For a lost leg don't worry: reattaching it is easy. Arms, well, that means you need to make an exchange. This problem does exist, but for the purposes of this review it didn't happen with mine.
Once you have the figure out, and opened the accessories you notice a rare sight: Boba's unhelmeted head. To say that Hasbro did an amazing job on making this look like a mini Temuera Morrison is no exaggeration! It's one of the best head sculpts they've ever done. Boba is in his outfit from The Book of Boba Fett. He has a cloth skirt that doesn't inhibit his lower body movement and has the new ball joint hips, a plus for making action style poses. He sports 17 POA as well, so he can do just about anything you want him to do pose wise. There were no issues with stuck joints either. While it has happened on some new figures (Reva, Migs Mayfield, Fennec Shand & Koska Reeves) it didn't happen for me here.
The accessories are his blaster rifle, a pistol, jetpack with flame accessories, a removable rocket also with flame effect, and 2 Stormtrooper helmets that look best attached on Imperial Remnant Stormtroopers, swapping those are easy. The pistol fits and stays in the holster, but I had trouble getting the blaster rifle to look good due to the plastic being too flexible. It takes work but he can hold it with both hands. The gummy plastic is something Hasbro needs to address, a balance of soft and sturdy is needed, and that's not collector opinion but a fact. The removable helmet is also a perfect fit, and for once doesn't look out of scale. Getting the jetpack on and off is also easily done.
Paint apps are very well done. This armor has been cleaned up from Boba's time in the Sarlaac. His face also shows light scarring which is a great paint application as well. I had no smears or smudges on my figure as you can see in the pictures. As far as the cloth skirt it seems durable so no fraying, but if you take him out of the package just keep it in mind, over time it MIGHT fray. No way of knowing that yet for a new figure.
Now is he essential? Let me put it this way, is oxygen essential?! It's Boba Fett for crying out loud! OF COURSE HE IS ESSENTIAL!! But at the price he is offered for, $26.49 MSRP, it's a bit much. The extra accessories aren't worth the extra $11-12 price hike, called The Boba Fett Tax by collectors. This is an outstanding figure, don't get me wrong. But this is a figure you may want to hold off on if the near $27 price tag keeps you away. Hasbro is likely to release this on a standard single card without the fancy flame effects on the jetpack and Stormtrooper helmets. So if you can afford this figure, go for it! If not wait until the single card version comes out. But this IS the best Boba Fett figure Hasbro has made in the 3.75 inch scale, and should be one you want to add into your collection!
1 & 2. The "Boba Fett Tax". Boba's jet pack with flame effects, removable missile, and 2 Stormtrooper helmets (battle damaged)
3. The Stormtrooper helmets look good on Remnant Stormtroopers, easy to switch heads.
4. Boba has the Two Handed Weapon Grip downpat! This was my easiest shot.
5, 6, & 7. Unmasked Boba. Look at that headsculpt! A mini Temuera Morrison!! Picture 7 is meant to be his 007 pose.
8. Boba with his pistol. Helmet is back on.
9. Showing off the articulation, similar to what I did with the new Darth Vader.
10. Staying Alive! Staying Alive! Ah-ah-ah staying aliiiiiiivvvvvvveeee!
11 & 12. Post victory picture from The Book of Boba Fett. Had to use a stand to keep Fennec Shand from falling over. When I review Fennec I'll use web photos as I have trouble getting her to hold her weapons. Of course I had Din Djarin being a proud papa holding Grogu!
13. In my head canon, Luke Skywalker brought Grogu to search for Din and stayed to help Boba fight the Spice runners. After the victory party, Grogu chooses Din's gift and Yoda's lightsaber. Din follows Luke back to Ossus so Grogu continues his training while Luke also trains Din Djarin in how to use the Darksaber.
14. Another shot of Boba. This time holding his helmet. I pointed it out in the review how I like how this came out. It looks in scale, and Hasbro did an amazing job on this figure!
