Needed VC Repack Updates
I love the Vintage Collection but there are some good figures, well, they need help. The photo real updates to older head sculpts are a nice touch (Endor Han and Bespin Han being prime examples) but other photo real updates still miss the mark (AOTC Anakin who I'll review later). But with modern technology and new hip joints a lot of Star Wars characters need these new updates. But some figures just need a cosmetic change. Han needs a new sculpt, so does Luke and Endor Leia (which got a new head sculpt, not photo real) to keep up with the changes. But some VC figures are good in their own right. Some of these figures also appeared in the 3.75 Black Series line. If you hate Disney characters, well, most of these figures are Disney era. But some, well, need some help.
1. Figure: Finn
From: 3.75 inch Black Series (easily capable of being placed in the VC)
Needs: New ball joint hips.
If there is any figure that needs a hip upgrade, it's Finn. Still has one of the better head sculpts and decent articulation except for the hips. They still use the ball socket hips. Add the new ball joint hips and Finn could get used as a Jedi, for whenever a Jedi Knight Finn action figure comes around. But this would upgrade his Episode 7 figure, which really isn't a bad figure.
2. Figure Rey (Jakku)
From: Vintage Collection
Needs: New head sculpt.
Jakku Rey isn't a bad action figure. Her Episode 9 figure is one of my favorite VC figures. All Hasbro really needs to do is make that Episode 9 Rey head sculpt fit the Episode 7 Rey figure. Some swapped the 5 POA Island Journey Rey head on the 3.75 Black Series/VC Jakku Rey figure. Not a bad swap but it doesn't really look like Daisy Ridley. This figure could use the head upgrade.
3. Jyn Erso
From: Vintage Collection
Needs: New head sculpt and new right hand
From the neck down Jyn is a good figure. The looser hip joints allow good motion so it's easier to pose her in action shots. Except she holds her gun crooked. Why a better right hand wasn't sculpted is beyond me! And the head sculpt. The hair looks good, but her face? Doesn't look like Felicity Jones. Jyn was part of the 1st wave of VC 2.0, and warmed pegs because most got her for $4 at Walmart clearance and Hasbro opted to not make changes to any of the 3.75 Black Series figures slapped on VC cards. If you have the 5 POA Jyn that came with the AT-ACT swap that head on this figure. I can't help you with the blaster.
4. Cassian Andor
From: Vintage Collection
Needs: Brand new head sculpt
From the neck down, Cassian is the best VC Rogue One figure that isn't the Stormtrooper. Actually next to the Deathtrooper it's my favorite debut action figure from Rogue One. He can do it all. But when Hasbro showed off the pipeline Cassian for the upcoming Andor series they gave him an awesome head sculpt! It actually looks like Diego Luna! Now just give his VC figure that head sculpt and RO hairstyle.
5. Kylo Ren
From: Vintage Collection
Needs: Ben Solo head, uncowled helmet, new ball joint legs
The best selling Disney Trilogy merchandise item is Kylo Ren. Yes his character is all Emo, but as a toy, he's great. But his Force Awakens figure needs upgrades. First, they made a 5 POA Unmasked Kylo, and that head can fit on the VC Kylo. The 5 POA Rogue One Kylo has an awesome helmet that can fit on the VC Kylo, making it possible to move his head. Just make a new head sculpt that actually looks like Adam Driver, add the 5 POA Rogue One Kylo helmet and that part is solved. For the lower body adding thigh swivels would help, but making brand new balljointed hips would be best. Just use Vader's legs from the latest figure and there, it works!
6. Anakin Skywalker
From: Vintage Collection
Needs: Brand new head sculpt
I said this in my review of Anakin from AOTC.
7. Bespin Luke Skywalker
From: Vintage Collection
Needs: everything from the waist down needs to be remade. Plus new head sculpts.
Bespin Luke was our first real "ball jointed hips" (actually ball socket hips but moving on) figure in the VC. Good for 2010 but not now. He has a diaper thing going on, and it looks bad. If they could take the Cave of Evil Luke's waist and slap it on the upper body, it would make a good figure. A Deluxe version could include a regular and bloody headed Luke so you have options. Just make sure the right hand can be removed!
