Ben Kenobi and Tonnika Sister's VC Reviews
After a long break, I'm back to doing figure reviews! I will do the last ones I had planned for 2025, and will be doing multiple reviews on single blog posts going forward. Today's figures are Cantina HasLab related, with all 3 figures being essential for Cantina displays. There's also been some breaking news over the last couple weeks, which I'll have in my Lagniappe section, a new feature to my posts going forward since I'm making them every other week now.
TONNIKA SISTERS
BREA TONNIKA
SENNI TONNIKA
Without a doubt, these 2 figures are the most anticipated figures in the history of Star Wars collecting. Ever since the return of the line in 1995, and the hundreds of figures made from 1995-1998 before the beginning of the launch of The Phantom Menace line in 1999, the Tonnika's have been requested in Fan's Choice polls. Finally, we get them. But it's in a HasLab. So you had either a $350 or $450 paywall if you wanted to get them. Which I did. But is the wait worth it? What do I like, what do I not like, and how can Hasbro utilize these bucks in making other figures?
Right off the bat, Senni is the taller figure, Brea is the shorter one. Both figures are well sculpted, especially the head sculpts. I have better detailed pictures of their faces in the photos below. I didn't have any problems with sticky joints, but after I opened them I did put them in just boiled water to loosen anything up that may have been tight.
The articulation is well done. They have the standard 17 POA all modern VC figures have. One thing they don't have is balance. I used Cantina chairs to prop them up in the photos above, and for the pose shot I had to lean them up against the wall. The paint apps are neat, no splotches (which if there were I would have complained even more so, as these were part of a $350 playset) or smears. The lack of balance means I'll need stands to display them, once I get the Cantina bar built. I didn't try them out sitting on the chairs, however. There are some limits to the articulation. There's good, bot great elbow and knee range. For figures that lack full knee articulation, I find they mostly don't sit well in the Cantina chairs. Another complaint is you can't quit put their arms down, like Randy from A Christmas Story, so their arms extend out a bit.
Accessory wise, they come with Padme's blasters (good spares if you lose either theirs or Padme's), an extra left hand, and a cup. Senni has bracelet on her left hand so you'll know which hand is which when placing them. The hands are easily swappable, no danger in any breaking. But if you worry about that, boil some water and lace their hands and arms in it to do a safe swap. My only knock is that Senni can't hold her cup that well. Brea is no problem, so you may want to use one of the extra Cantina cups for her. Brea had no problem holding her cup, although for my pictures I'm not certain the right side if the cup was up. Oh, well. The blasters can fit in either hand. I showed them different in each figure to show them off.
Senni is very tall. The actress who played her was 6'2. She probably couldn't be used again for other figures. But, these figures also make an old Legends story make zero sense. Han had hired the sisters to seduce Lando, and Lando couldn't tell the difference. I mean, Lando is a ladies man, he would be able to know 2 different women are conning him, after all! Senni is almost as tall as Darth Vader, as seen here.
Brea I see having multiple uses. Her buckncould be used for an updated Aurra Sing, and even for a Mara Jade figure. I put her with Luke to show her height, the hairstyle makes her slightly taller than him. With these bucks, I don't see Hasbro not utilizing them to make new figures. Leesub Sirln could also be possible (I have her in storage at the moment so I didn't put photograph her). I think it's a mistake for Hasbro to have only put these 2 figures to be available only as part of a HasLab, but I was getting it anyway so they're icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. So far there aren't plans to make them for the Black Series, so there's something else VC collectors can celebrate. But if they did get a Sixer release, I know VC collectors would revolt. If you want the Sisters, the only way to get them is to buy a Cantina HasLab on eBay, or hope someone is selling the individual figures. Would they be worth secondary market prices? Not really. It's more about nostalgia. The only Tonnika Sister figure before this was from Galoob's Micro Machines line, and these figures check off a long time fan request. But for what was paid, they should have been better figures.
BEN (OBI-WAN) KENOBI
Before I begin my review, I had to get a 3rd figure since the one I planned to display in the Cantina, the modified Legacy Collection Ben Kenobi broke in half. So, I will show off the figure I will display, and one with a wardrobe switch that will be my "go to" figure. When it was announced that Ben Kenobi was getting a new figure, there was much rejoicing. And rightfully so! But, with all good things, there are problems with the figure. Read on to find out if I'm willing to overlook them!
First thoughts when I opened him, not bad! No too tight joints, he has a strong waist (my LC Ben sadly didn't. RIP), and no problems moving his elbows and knees. But the robe he's included with doesn't allow for the hood to be moved up. I found a fix around, though. More on that soon. But the paint apps are flawless, the head sculpt is near perfect, and he's got a decent amount of balance. Getting a stand to display him off the card is highly recommended. In some later shots, I had difficulty getting him to stand.
As you can see, he's easy to articulate. He's got the standard 17 POA. The cloth skirt doesn't hinder his ability to sit down. I raised it because I hadn't had a real chance to check out the leg sculpt, but it's all new head to toe. But, I see a problem. The leg sculpt looks similar to the upcoming ROTS Obi-Wan, and I'm talking about the knee joint being so close to the boot. There should be some space. For Ben Kenobi, it's acceptable because of the cloth skirt hiding it. But for a ROTS era Obi-Wan, it ain't. Just my thoughts. And while it was a struggle, I could get him to do a THWG with the lightsaber! More on that in a moment. But he can sit in the Falcon (photos of that coming shortly), and in a Cantina chair without any difficulty.
Ben comes with his robe, unlit lightsaber hilt and a lit lightsaber. But to get the hood up, I took the robe I had given my LC Ben Kenobi which I believe originally belonged to Aayla Secura. It fits well. The unlit hilt fits well on his belt, and it took some doing but I got a decent THWG on both with and without the robe on. But, with the hood up, it made photographing it difficult. I'd be okay with a plastic hood for a proper "hood up" Ben. He also looks good next to his Force Ghost version, if you wanted to see what he looks like with a plastic skirt. But, this figure corrects a mistake with the Obi-Wan figures from the Obi-Wan Series: the tiny lightsaber. Ben comes with a larger lightsaber, as you can see with my modified Jedi Legend Obi-Wan. Of course, I do plan to give my JL Obi-Wan one of the Ben Kenobi lightsabers, and will give the "tiny" lightsaber to one of my spare Rey figures, or even Leia. And yeah, it isn't noticeable in the 1st Vader picture, but I used a Cantina chair to prop him up. I had to lean Ben on the wall for a couple of those shots.
Overall, I am satisfied with this figure. He does what he needs to do, and is great for displays in the Cantina and Falcon, leaving him carded, or (shocker) for playing. Heck, since there wasn't a "ghost" Ben Kenobi back in the Kenner days, I had him teaching Bespin Luke, then Jedi Luke as they went to face Vader and the Emperor. Even did that in my POTF2 early collecting days. Needless to say, Ben Kenobi is essential for any and every Star Wars collector. So, this would be a safe birthday, graduation or Christmas gift for a Star Wars collector you know. Right now (February 2026) you should be able to find him at or slightly above the standard retail price of $19.99, it just depends where you look. Don't go on eBay for him just yet, as those prices will be higher. Does this figure have flaws? Yes, but I can over look them. But it's hard to do when a future version from his younger days will use the same parts, that have a flaw that's easily seen.
LAGNIAPPE
New segment since I'm doing posts every 2 weeks. I sum up what the latest Star Wars news is, plus random thoughts on Star Wars related topics.
1. Mandalorian and Grogu trailer. We get our first look at Embo (he'll be a figure review very shortly, albeit his Clone Wars version) and the new Razor Crest. Plus we see Din without his helmet so we can confirm Pedro Pascal is in the movie. Plus we've seen the new Deluxe Mando with Grogu VC figure, and with it having barbell hips, I preordered one.
2. Anthony Daniels turned 80 yesterday! May he have a great one! I actually saw him when he hosted a Star Wars concert, there was no meet and greet with him, but that's the closest I've come to meeting an OT era actor.
3. Customs! I've worked on a few, and I'm not yet ready to photograph them. But with my extra Darth Revan and Cal Kestis figures I've done some swapping, some cutting and some painting. My brown paint works well, so I have a Sixer Old Man Han I need to work on. And I'll promise to show off some of my POTF2 ere custom figures later on.
4. My Cantina construction has run into a problem: my hands. I've been dealing with nerve pain since a bad car wreck years ago, and I'm currently in therapy again for it. I hope to start soon, but my original planned display area isn't big enough for it, so I have to improvise. That's why I haven't been able to get it done. It's coming, just need to find something to display it on. Right now, my BB-8 playset may have to be replaced by the Cantina for my photo shoots. If anyone has display suggestions, please let me know!
5. The Cantina patrons sold out quickly on Pulse. I was on the fence but once I saw November as the ship date, I breathed a sigh of relief. 2026 doesn't look like I'll be getting as many figures this year as last year. But I'm hoping we get new AOTC versions of Obi-Wan and Anakin, a Geonosian Warrior, and a couple Arena Jedi (Ki-Adi Mundi would be nice) along with probale repacks of Mace Windu, Aayla Secura, Kit Fisto and Barriss Offee. I'd prefer new versions but I doubt Hasbro would make them all new.
6. Since blogspot is a spam word on Disqus, if you Google search "Star Wars Sunday blog" it will take you to my X account, where I post the link in my bio. I have found editing my profile on Disqus to have that link is a pain in the ass, as it always reverts my edit back to what it originally was even after I save it. I can't even put an X post link in Disqus, or a Google search link anymore.
Thanks for reading! Please share this link on your social media accounts so I can get more readers! A special thanks to Chris and Nomad at BanthaSkull for allowing me to post this in the comments section!
