Agent Kallus VC Figure Review
I'm going to admit something before I begin my review: I had absolutely low expectations for this figure. Kallus borrows his buck from the Rebels Thrawn VC figure, and since Kallus gets into a lot of action in Rebels when he was loyal to the Empire, I wasn't certain he could get into any action poses. Needless to say, I was wrong. Completely wrong. And since I was pleasantly surprised, and I need to be in a positive mood (details at the end of the post), I decided to go with my review of Agent Kallus, making his VC debut. And his first figure since 2014, and Sixers don't even have a Kallus yet. Ha! VC gets a win! Another note, today is the 63rd anniversary of the release of Dr No, the first James Bond Film, and today's review is a happy coincidence, as today's figure review is of an agent. More on 007 at the end of this article.
As I mentioned, Kallus shares the same buck as Rebels Thrawn, but with additional chest armor sculpted onto the upper body. The sculpt is a very good one, especially his head sculpt. He has a stern expression, and only Wolverine has better mutton chops. He's got the standard 17 POA all modern, new figures have. I had no trouble with any tight joints, but I'll go into the articulation a but more. But what impressed me the most about Kallus is he's well balanced. In the 2 pictures above, he isn't leaning back. He's standing straight up, unassisted. No foot on a peg, no leaning. So you probably don't need a stand if you choose to display him loose. It's a work of art!
The top photo above, I did have to lean him back, but he's impressive articulation wise. Which is a pleasant surprise as when I reviewed Rebels Thrawn I didn't really test its articulation limits. I did so with Kallus. His head is on a barbell neck socket, and has a good range of motion. Shoulders, elbows, knees are ball jointed. He's got swivel thighs, rocker ankle joints, and swivel wrists with up/down motion. His skirt doesn't inhibit articulation as much as I feared, either. I doubt I could get him to sit in a Cantina booth, but he might fit into a 5 POA themed vehicle (I'll take pictures of him in the Inquisitors TIE Fighter later on, for additional material in a future blog post). I wanted to show off the back, so you could see the additional details on his upper body armor.
Accessory wise, Kallus comes with his extended staff with energy effect, and a removable helmet that actually seems to be in scale to the figure. But don't think I want more removable helmets in future figures, I still prefer swappable heads (normal and helmeted), but if something is done well, I want to call Hasbro out for it. But sadly, there is no place on Kallus to store his staff, so you'll need to put it in a bag. On a pleasant note, I took the blaster version of the staff that came with the 5 POA Kallus figure, and he holds it quite well, fortunately there is a part that sticks out on the side that enables him to do a THWG, but it's a loose fit, so it does come off slightly crooked. He can however hold his staff quite well in a THWG. Below, check out Kallus vs Zeb.
The last picture above is my favorite, and if I had a VC S1 Ezra, this is a recreation of their duel from S1, and just before Ezra Force pushed Kallus away like a rag doll. But he looks good fighting Zeb, as seen in the first picture above. So now you finally have someone to pose against Zeb in an action display, and you have a figure that helps build out The Ghost HasLab. And while that is good, comparing the rollout of the Cantina HasLab, the Ghost is sadly lacking. It's one reason why my Last Figure Standing Top 10 had Maul, Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother as we need those figures as well. And of course Old Man Rex, S1 Ezra & Sabine, among others. That has irritated me, and likely some of you that backed The Ghost.
Now is Kallus essential? If you backed the Ghost, or loved Rebels: yes. If you only collect OT era, you might want to skip him. But, if you do you're missing out on a very good figure. Even if I hadn't backed The Ghost, I would have gotten this figure. Rebels is one of the few Disney shows that I like, and I hope one day we get Rebel Alliance Kallus in the future. Overall, I highly recommend getting this figure, he's a great addition to any collection. And with VC figures getting a $3 increase later this year, now is the time to get him!
Okay, I have a medical procedure tomorrow (it's nothing major but it's going to hurt like Hell), and my posting of this link again Monday will be my last presence on social media and BanthaSkull comments for a few days. I need a temporary break, and this is the time to do it. I'm debating on whether or not to do a blog post next Sunday or not, I have a post rough draft, but it needs a lot of work. Either way, in 2 weeks I will have another figure review.
Thanks for reading! A special thanks to Chris and Nomad at BanthaSkull for allowing me to post this link in the comments section! Please share this link on your social media accounts so I can get more readers!
I really needed a thumb nail for Never Say Never Again. I recognize that as an official Bond Film over the travesty of the previous movie entry. Kinda stinks this is the edited images from Amazon, couldn't find one with Bond holding his signature sidearm in the group images, though. Anyway, today is a day to celebrate 007, and while Amazon has made a big out of the gate stumble, this franchise can still be appreciated for what it has delivered in the past. Same with Star Wars. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, and I'll see y'all when I see y'all!
