New Rey Skywalker movie/Ahsoka Series

On Good Friday, Disney showed off the new Ahsoka trailer. It looks great! The other big news is a new movie with Rey Skywalker and her new Jedi Order. So, what are my thoughts about these projects? You might honestly be surprised. So read on to find out!

New Rey Skywalker Movie

I don't know if this will be a trilogy or maybe a duology, or what. I'm writing this on a Friday/Saturday for Sunday publication so new info may come out before Sunday. Now inevitably Disney has to come back to this era, and they feel that now is the time to do it. Hopefully Disney has learned their lessons and will do the following:

1. Find a story and stick to it.
2. Character development!!
3. Be entertaining.

That's what they need to do. Rey pretty much had everything easy in the Disney Trilogy. I would like to see her struggle with a student or friend who goes over to the dark side. Or deal with a new outside threat like the Yuuzhan Vong from Legends or the Grysk from Timothy Zahn's New Canon Thrawn novels. Or an adversary like Abeloth from Legends who can match Rey on every level (I'm being somewhat sarcastic). This movie is said to take place 15 years after Episode 9, so Daisy Ridley will actually be younger than her character. I have faith in Daisy as an actress, she is really good in that area. But, the only concerns I have are about the story. The last time, the story wasn't good. At all.

But, as I've said before, if they would use these movies to follow up on what George Lucas had originally planned for the sequels (the main point of Luke discovering the mysteries of the Force) and have Rey take the path he would have had Luke walk (pun not intended but conveniently placed) then this could get interesting. Now, if they get John Boyega and Oscar Isaac back, along with other actors and actresses whose characters survived the sequels, and the story is good, this could be what Disney needs. I'll keep an open mind. But if it sucks, well, then Disney Star Wars will be in serious trouble. A lot is riding on this, that much is obvious. The failsafe might be 'The First Jedi' movie that is also in development.

Ahsoka Series

Now this is more like it! I was a huge fan of Star Wars Rebels so finally seeing Hera and Sabine (and Ezra Bridger via hologram) in live action was pretty cool! Also got to see Chopper, although if you watched Rebels Recon and Rogue One you did see him in live action, although it looks like Disney built an all new version as he looks less animated. Plus there is a cool new toy out for him you can preorder next week, and if it's under $100 I might get one.

For many fans of my generation (1980's and 1990's kids) this is "our only hope" for "good Star Wars". I am keeping an open mind on the new post Episode 9 movie, but the track record hasn't been great. The third season of The Mandalorian has not been totally bad, but it isn't totally great either. Now Dave Filoni (who will also direct a live action movie, which one is unknown at this writing) has had a long time to tell this story. Rebels ended in 2018, so he has had time to get the story right. And for better or worse, he is the best at this in the current bullpen of Lucasfilm writers.

We also see Thrawn (who is played by Lars Mikkelsen who provided Thrawn's voice on Rebels), only the back of his head and shoulders so no clue who's playing him. Ezra is mentioned but not seen. But Morgan Elsbeth makes her return, and so do 3 dark side users if their red/orange lightsaber blades are any indication. So, fan service, check. Nostalgia trigger with Ahsoka saying "Heir to the Empire", double check. There are high expectations for this series.

Which also presents a problem. The current season of The Mandalorian has DEFINITELY not lived up to expectations. And if this show does the same as the current Mando season, I fear the fan disconnect will be severe. It's one thing to please critics. It's another to please fans, and the hardcore fans who watch the shows and movies, plus buy toys, books and comics. Just like with the new movie era, this show HAS to be a success with fans. But more importantly, with the hardcore fans. If Disney loses the hardcore fans, there's trouble. Because casual fans aren't the ones keeping Star Wars afloat. So don't mess this up, Disney.
