Han Solo in Carbonite Kenner POTF Review
"This is the end....my only friend, the end!" Haunting lyrics, but this is the end of my POTF reviews, as I will lead into the Kenner Return of the Jedi figures as the 40th anniversary of that film commences. Seeing the pictures, you can tell Kenner just had difficulty capturing Harrison Ford's likeness for their Star Wars line. They even had difficulty when they did Indiana Jones, although honestly it looks like they used Bespin Han to make Indy (not pictured).
This figure was one of the last ones released in the Kenner era, around 1985. He can pass as both an Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi version since we all know how Han became a Carbonite wall decoration in Jabba the Hutt's Palace. Seriously he held that room together! (Inserted a gratuitous Family Guy joke for the sake of it!) You would have thought by 1985 they would get something right, but honestly they came close to getting a near likeness of Harrison Ford, with one massive issue: his neck! While the face sculpt is actually decent, mold limitations of the time forced Kenner to make Han's neck more massive to accommodate a larger head sculpt. That's the reason this is often called "Bull Neck Han Solo" by long time collectors.
Gigantic neck aside, Han has the standard 5 POA and only comes with his Carbonite block which is not screen accurate. However as you can see in the photos below he can be snapped into the back of it and unsnapped to get out. Really simple. Picky collectors can argue about his shirt being tucked or untucked in both ESB and ROTJ but I am not that picky. It's close enough and looks good so I won't complain. As you can see, displaying him inside or outside the block is good from either angle. For an accurate Kenner era Han in Carbonite block, find the Slave I Carbonite Han that came in the ship.
