AOTC 20th Anniversary: Bultar Swan Character Review
The Battle of Geonosis was the first time we saw a large group of Jedi get into a fight. It is one of the best onscreen moments in the 6 Lucas Films, and there are a lot of them. But the obscure ones are the ones that fascinated me the most. With Obi-Wan, Anakin, Mace, Ki-Adi Mundi we knew a bit about them. Same with Luminara Undili and Barriss Offee thanks to the novel The Approaching Storm (which to me is still Canon as the world Ansion is where the novel takes place and Mace mentions Obi-Wan just returned from there). One such Jedi was Bultar Swan, who has developed a cult fandom following.
In Legends, Bultar appeared in the Obi-Wan and Anakin young reader novels. She was trained by Micah Giiett until his death in the Stark Hyperspace War. After he died, Plo Koon took over her training and she became a Jedi Knight. On a mission with Obi-Wan, Anakin asked her about nightmares, and she dismissed his claim as she told him that Jedi did not have nightmares and that he should talk to his master about this. She would be part of the 212 Jedi who went to Geonosis and would survive. She would also survive Order 66, but in a meeting of Jedi survivors on Kessel, Jedi Koffi Arana would kill her in anger as she refused to strike down a literally disarmed Darth Vader.
In Disney Canon she is a recently promoted Jedi Knight and fought back to back with Stass Allie, each keeping the other alive while facing overwhelming odds. Bultar had thought that there would be no war if the Jedi ignited their lightsabers, and she likely wasn't the only Jedi who thought that way. She would be herded into the final circle of surviving Jedi with Mace, Obi-Wan, Anakin and others as Mace refuses to surrender to Dooku. We know she does survive Geonosis but whether she survived Order 66 as she did in Legends is unknown.
Bultar has become a favorite amongst fans over the years. No doubt being portrayed by a beautiful actress helped fuel the love! Bultar was going to be featured in a Jedi one shot comic book, as Mace Windu and Aayla Secura had done so. But while she didn't get a comic book, she did get not one, but 2 action figures! Her 1st action figure was a comic pack with Koffi Arana from their appearance in the 1st Purge comic book. She would then have a figure in an Evolutions Jedi 3 pack that included Qui-Gon Jinn, Bultar in her Jedi outfit, and Luke Skywalker from the New Jedi Order era. Not bad for a character that maybe got 40 seconds of screen time!
