Kenner Boba Fett

Finally the Kenner Star Wars cards get wrapped up here, with the one, the only, Boba Fett! For many, this is their favorite Vintage Kenner figure, and it is a great figure no doubt! No other Star Wars carded figure has this much detail except for Darth Vader. Plus there is a story that may or may not be true about this figure, depending on your point of view. For the story, time to read on, but first, a musical number by MC Chris because, well, I'm humming it as I type:

First thing's first: the figure itself. Standard 5 POA, and comes with a different colored Imperial blaster. He has no cape, but has a jetpack molded onto his back, with the rocket glued on to it. Yes, there is a story behind it, more on that later. The first version showed up in 1979, and is a lighter blue suit color, as he was in the Holiday Special. In 1980 for The Empire Strikes Back, his suit is a darker blue color. The green chest paint, yellow boots and red visor are the same no matter what version. For 1979, there is a LOT of work on the sculpt, and the detail put into this figure is not matched by many toys made in the 1970's.

Okay, the rocket. Originally Boba was supposed to be released with a rocket firing action. Some dispute this, but a closer look at the jetpack shows a common J shaped joint which was used on firing toys back then. The feature was scrapped when a child playing with the Mattel Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper accidentally swallowed the firing rocket into his mouth and choked to death. Mattel quickly eliminated the feature, and Kenner likely followed suit. Now some say the rocket was never meant to fire, but that the top of the jet pack couldn't be sculpted so they just glued the rocket so that it would look like it did on screen. Just passing on the story. Make up your mind on whether the toy was supposed to have a firing rocket or not. It would be a moot point because in 2010 a rocket firing Boba Fett figure would get made. With the J shaped firing joint.

So ends the Star Wars carded figures, and the introduction into The Empire Strikes Back cards! I'll only cover the new figures from the film, so stay tuned for more Kenner reviews featuring ESB toys!!
