Fan Fiction & Alternate Reality
Alternate realities, do they have a place in Star Wars? I'll answer that question in a bit. Alternate realities in science fiction aren't a "new" idea. The idea of alternate realities actually existing onscreen is new. When the 2009 Star Trek film came out it wasn't an unseen moment from the past, it was a bold "new" future made possible by Nero going back in time. This is at least my first recollection of an alternate reality playing out onscreen.
For Star Trek this has happened for years. Fan fictions, and later comic books and pocket novels played out infinite alternate stories that aren't considered Trek Canon. Most stories aren't bad. Some are cringe worthy. But it exists. This doesn't mean the older stuff isn't appreciated. I walked away from Trek until the 2009 movie came out. I went out and bought the entire OS, and TNG on DVD, plus any old Trek book I could find. I enjoyed "NuTrek" but still appreciated and enjoyed the classic Trek.
But of course this is a blog about Star Wars. So, does it have a place in Star Wars? Yes. Like Trek, fan fiction got a big boost thanks to the internet. Webrings about characters helped, and sites like the old fanfix dot com had hundreds, maybe close to or above a thousand stories. Now there is a new fan fiction collective for both Star Wars & Star Trek. Just do a search if interested.
For all Star Wars fans, the fan fictions provide an alternate reality escape. Legends fans like me were in an uproar when Chewbacca got killed off. To make matters worse, the Solo child he died saving, Anakin Solo was killed off a few books later, presumably called for by George Lucas. There are fan fictions that go a different direction. For Disney Canon there are stories with Ben Solo surviving.
But one of the most popular fan fiction subjects are stories about Luke Skywalker & Mara Jade (close to 700 stories on the main fan fiction site). Legends inspired mostly, with some stories taking place in the Disney era. It's a favorite alternate reality subject for Star Wars fans.
So, as fans debate the "Filoniverse" saying Ezra Bridger's rescue of Ahsoka Tano created a ripple in the Star Wars time/space continuum, know that while it hasn't been shown onscreen alternate realities DO HAVE A PLACE IN STAR WARS!!
The best part is that as a fan, you can choose which path you want to follow. And if you are like me and prefer the Lucas Era Star Wars films, or the new ones, there are places for you to go to find new stories about your favorite characters.
