Vintage Kenner Chewbacca Review

Chewbacca was also included in the Early Bird Kit, and is one of the few figures (Ben Kenobi, Vader, & Stormtrooper) that had no name changes, or changes made to the figure over the run of the line from 1978-85. He has only 4 articulation points (4 POA) as his head cannot move. His bandloier strap is painted white but over time it fades away, his eyes are blue, and I some cases doesn't fade over time. He comes with his bowcaster weapon that he won't fire onscreen in A New Hope. But what stands out is the detail of the sculpting of his fur. It was incredible even in 1978, and it still holds up well, even by today's standards!

As I mentioned, there were no name changes or other additions or subtractions made to Chewbacca during this time. His card was the same for all 3 movies, but would later get a new card image for Return of the Jedi showing an actual scene from the movie. He's also the tallest figure of the Vintage Kenner line, just slightly taller than Darth Vader. Fitting him in any of the vehicles is easy to do as he is sculpted in a simple, non action pose. He can hold his crossbow in his right hand the best as it attaches to his forearm.

Strangely enough there are no variants of this figure. The fur is the same color, and only the paint applications are different. Some eyes are normal, some may have slightly larger pupils than normal. Not officially a variant if you have this but in the end it's all about getting someone to pay for purchase, but if someone tries that line on you with this figure, you can tell them "No sale". Be sure to check the stamped date to tell the difference from the 2019 version. This mold also was used for a 1995 4 pack which was exclusive to Toy's R Us. There are no changes made in those newer versions to the original.
